Week 3 Wrap-up

As some people have pointed out to me, I didn't make a prediction this past weekend. The reason for that was selfish, I thought my predictions were bad luck and I was trying to shake it up a little; that plan backfired.

Coastal Carolina is a talented team with athletes at every position and I would be shocked if they didn't win the Big South this year. As for the Hawks, it was a rough day, but there were some positives to take away. Nick Romeo had a good day receiving and Jose Gumbs lowered the boom on a few Chanticleers from his safety spot.

This week, MU travels to take on future NEC member Bryant in Rhode Island, their second trip to the Ocean State this year. I will have a full preview and PREDICTION up by Thursday/Friday.

Eddy-

What is the deal with the Hawks constantly lining up in their base defense when teams come out and go 3 or 4 wide? It is clear our LBs couldnt keep up with the Big South speed as they killed us underneath all game long.

mufb02,

Your point is a valid one, and you're right when you say that Coastal's receivers have tremendous speed.

As far as trying to guess why Monmouth stayed in their base defense when CCU when went with 3 or 4 receiver sets, it could be a few different things. It all depends on whether MU was in man or zone defense (it appeared as though they played a lot of zone in the game) and which match-ups they thought worked best for them. Maybe the Hawks wanted their best 11 tacklers on the field and felt that their base D afforded them that best chance.

It's easy to second guess the defense, but the facts are that Coastal is going to throw the ball on many opponents this season and the real issue going forward is whether the MU line can pressure the quarterback and the secondary can maintain coverage.

Good point though mufb02 and thanks for checking out the blog.
